Hindu views of HIV/AIDS.
Hinduism is a very vibrant and heterogenous religion. There is no central Hindu authority, thus, attitudes towards the LGBTIQ+ community and issues vary at different temples and ashrams.
The Hindu American Foundation says that there is no fundamental spiritual reason to reject or exclude LGBTIQ+ individuals, it states that: “given their inherent spiritual equality, Hindus should not socially ostracise LGBTIQ+ individuals, but should accept them as fellow sojourners on the path to moksha”.
The Gay and Lesbian Vaishnava Association (GALVA) explains how traditional Hinduism is demonstrably far more understanding and liberal in its depiction of the LGBTIQ+ community. In this article, they draw examples from scriptures and various Hindu deities to support this point.
When it comes to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, there has not been a clear, unified response among Hindu religious leaders.
However, the Hindu principles of truth, purity, compassion, and selflessness would imply that Hindus should accept and behave compassionately towards people living with HIV.
